All LEAP sessions are conducted personally by Dr. Kathleen Broughan (on the right) and/or Dr. Julie Lipovsky with assistance from EAGALA trained equine professionals.

Dr. Broughan is a clinical and sports psychologist with over 25 years experience.  She is licensed in both South Carolina and Tennessee. After earning her Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee, she began her professional career with the Helen Ross McNabb Mental Health Center.

After leaving HRMC, she founded Child and Adult Clinical Associates, a private psychotherapy practice that she owned and managed for over ten years.  Dr. Broughan has worked with a wide range of client populations including adults, at-risk children and adolescents, and families.

Dr. Broughan is uniquely qualified and credentialed as an equine -assisted psychotherapist because she is both a highly experienced clinical and sports psychologist and an equine professional.  Dr. Broughan is an EAGALA certified equine-assisted therapist. EAGALA (Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association) is the non-profit organization that founded Equine-Assisted Assessment & Psychotherapy and maintains the standards and practices of the modality.

She has been riding and training horses since high school and in 1998 she was awarded the United States Dressage Federation’s Silver Medal.  In 1999, Dr. Broughan was a credentialed equestrian sports psychologist at the European Championships in Holland. In 2000, she served as team psychologist for TEAM ISRAEL in Israel's bid for a spot in the Olympics.

Dr. Julie Lipovsky is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at The Citadel and served as the Program Director of its Clinical Counseling Masters program from 1993 - 2003.  She has also maintained a private practice in Charleston for over ten years. She is a licensed Clinical Psychologist in South Carolina and a Diplomate of the Board of Professional Psychology in both Clinical and Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology.

Prior to joining the Citadel, Dr. Lipovsky was on the faculty of  the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at the Medical University of South Carolina where she served as Director of Training.  Here she provided clinical services to children, families, and adults exposed to trauma, including sexual abuse/rape and other crimes.

Dr. Lipovsky is also an EAGALA certified equine-assisted therapist.
